Yuju Stele Pavilion, Changwon
창원 유주비각 · 昌原 維舟碑閣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krOff the coast of Yongwon-dong lies an island covered in scrub trees known as Mangsando, and a rocky islet about 70 metres to its south-east is called Yujuam; both are linked to legends concerning Empress Heo, queen of King Suro of the Garak kingdom. Seven years after King Suro of Garak had established his capital, when his ministers urged him to take a queen, he said that his own descent to this land had been the will of Heaven, and that Heaven would likewise send him a queen. He ordered his ministers to go to the shore and wait, and as they did so a ship approached from the sea to the south-west, its red banners flying. It carried Empress Heo, a princess of Ayuta in India, and her retinue; the place where they first came ashore was Mangsando, and the ship on which they had sailed is said to have capsized and become Yujuam. About one kilometre from Yujuam and Mangsando stands the Yuju Stele Pavilion, which preserves the legend of Empress Heo.
