Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis site comprises the birthplace of Bak Je-sang, an eternally loyal subject of the Silla period, and inside the shrine are enshrined portraits of Lord Bak Je-sang and his son, Baekgyeol. In front of the shrine stands the Hyochungsa stone stele, inscribed with an account of Bak Je-sang's achievements. Bak Je-sang's pen name was Gwanseoldang. A descendant of Bak Hyeokgeose, the founder of Silla, he went to Goguryeo in the second year of King Nulji (418) and brought back the king's younger brother Bokho, who had been held there as a hostage. He then crossed to Japan and, by stratagem, secured the escape of another royal brother, Misahun, likewise held hostage there, giving himself up to capture in the process. The king of Wae cruelly tortured Je-sang in an attempt to make him his subject, but Je-sang would not yield, declaring, "I would rather be an ox or a pig in Gyerim Forest than become a subject of your country." It is said that even the Wae king was moved to regret at Je-sang's death, such was his resolve.
