An eupseong is a walled town that protected the residents of a gun (county) or hyeon (district) while combining military and administrative functions. This walled town, built in the early Joseon period, encloses almost the entire seat of Myeoncheon-myeon, Dangjin-gun, South Chungcheong Province. The wall is about 1,200 metres in circumference and was built of dressed natural stone; because stone was later removed from the site for reservoir construction and other projects, much of the wall has since been lost. The western and southern walls survive relatively well: the western wall stands about 3.6 metres high, its inner face built sloping in a trapezoidal profile 6.8 metres wide at the base and 2.4 metres wide at the top. There appear to have been four gates, but only the east gate survives, 8.8 metres wide. On one of the stones used to build the wall, the characters for 'gimi-nyeon' (己未年) can be seen carved. The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty record that the wall was built in 1439, the 21st year of King Sejong, which was a gimi year, so the gimi-nyeon carved on the stone is thought to record the year the wall was built. Myeoncheoneupseong is a typical lowland walled town built in the early Joseon period, and is an important source for research into Joseon-period defence facilities.
