This shrine was built to honour the loyalty of Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545–1598), who rendered great service during the Imjin War, and General Kim Eok-chu (1548–1618), who served under his command. Yi Sun-sin was the 'sacred hero' of the Imjin War and the Jeongyu War (the second Japanese invasion), the man who led the war to victory. General Kim Eok-chu passed the military examination in 1578, the 11th year of King Seonjo, and during the Imjin War served as defence commander of Jeolla Province; he took part in Yi Sun-sin's strategy conference at Jinju and made a great contribution to the decisive victory at the Battle of Myeongnyang, after which he became army commander of the left garrison of Gyeongsang Province and magistrate of Jeju-mok. The shrine measures three kan across the front and two kan along the side, roofed with a hipped-and-gabled paljak roof, so called because its side profile resembles the Chinese character 八 ('eight'). In the garden at the shrine's entrance stand statues of the two men, and every year on 28 April, Yi Sun-sin's birthday, descendants of the Cheongju Kim clan gather to hold a memorial rite honouring the virtue and loyalty of both.
