This is the tomb of General Yi Sun-mong (李順蒙, 1386–1449), posthumously titled Wiyanggong, a military official of the early Joseon period. In 1419 (the first year of King Sejong), as Right Army Commander (Ugunjeolchesa), he joined Yi Jong-mu and others in the expedition against Tsushima Island and won a great victory. The tomb site takes the form of ssangbun, twin burial mounds in which he was buried together with his wife. The mounds are square, and each is reinforced below with a two-tiered stone retaining wall. The burial ground rises in three terraces marked off by gyecheseok, long flat boundary stones dividing the site, and preserves well the original form of early Joseon tomb design. Only one tomb marker (myopyo) survives, standing before Yi Sun-mong's mound; it was erected in 1509 (the fourth year of King Jungjong). It takes the gyusu-bangbuhyeong form — a stele with a rounded-corner cap stone on a square base — and is important material for the study of early Joseon tomb markers. Stone civil officials (munseogin) were placed in pairs, one pair on the middle tier and one on the lower tier, well reflecting the twin-mound burial system of the early Joseon period. All the figures wear the bokdu-gongbok, the headpiece called bokdu together with the ceremonial robe of a civil official; one bokdu takes the gyogak form, with its two ends crossing, a style similar to the stone figures at King Taejo's Geonwolleung Royal Tomb. Their bulging eyes and rugged, forceful expressions well embody their symbolic role of guarding the tomb. This tomb is significant for how well it preserves the original form of an early Joseon burial. It is a valuable piece of heritage in particular because it allows the diverse types popular in that era — square retaining stones, a terraced tomb layout, a 15th-century gyusu-bangbuhyeong tomb marker and stone civil officials — to be seen together in one place.
