This was the study of Yang Paeng-son (pen name Hakpo), a scholar and painter-calligrapher active during the reign of King Jungjong of Joseon (r. 1506-1544), though the building standing today is not the original but was built by his descendants in the 1920s. Yang Paeng-son (1488-1545) was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period who passed the state examination in 1516, the 11th year of King Jungjong, and went on to hold posts including censor (jeongeon), jeongnang, suchan and gyori. After losing his office in the Gimyo Purge of 1519, the 14th year of King Jungjong, he retired to his hometown, where in 1521 he built Hakpodang and spent his days teaching students and composing poetry and paintings. He was skilled in both writing and painting, and his surviving works include the two-volume collection Hakpo-yujip. Hakpodang was repaired in 1994, and its outer three-bay gate was rebuilt to its original form in 1995. A surrounding wall was installed in 1996 and repaired in 1997. The hall measures three bays across the front and three bays along the side, with a hipped-and-gabled paljak roof that forms the shape of the character 八 (eight) when viewed from the side. Within the grounds stands a single old ginkgo tree.
