Cheongpung Mangwolsanseong Fortress, Jecheon
제천 청풍 망월산성 · 堤川 淸風 望月山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a small stone fortress encircling the summit of Mangwolsan Mountain, 373m above sea level, in Multae-ri, Cheongpung-myeon, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, with a circumference of 495m. It is also called Sayeori-sanseong or Seongyeolsan. According to the Silla Annals of the Samguk sagi, the walls of Sayeolsanseong were extended in the 13th year of King Munmu (673), suggesting that the fortress was built during the Three Kingdoms period. Cheongpung was originally Sayeori-hyeon of Goguryeo. After it came under Silla, it was renamed Cheongpung-hyeon in the 16th year of King Gyeongdeok (757) and made a subordinate county of Naeje-gun, later Jecheon — from which it is inferred that the fortress was in fact built during the earlier Sayeori-hyeon period. Today the wall survives in good condition, with a fully intact section on the southwest face 16m wide and 3m high, and another on the south side 15m wide and 4.6m high.
