This spring lies beside a national road about 300 m in front of Naju City Hall. It is the place where King Taejo Wang Geon of Goryeo and Lady Jang-hwa, of the Oh clan, first met, and the spring is known as a washing spring, or Wansacheon. According to tradition, before founding Goryeo, Wang Geon spent ten years stationed in Naju. One day he noticed an auspicious five-coloured cloud above a hill near a ferry crossing, and on going to look he found a beautiful woman washing clothes at the spring. When Wang Geon asked for a bowl of water, the woman floated willow leaves on it, so that he would not drink it too quickly. Drawn by her intelligence and beauty, Wang Geon took her as his wife; she became Lady Jang-hwa of the Oh clan, and the son she bore, named Mu, later became the second king, Hyejong. The site was newly refurbished in 1986 and has remained in its present form since.
