These are several thousand Baekje tombs distributed at the foot of the hill behind Pyojeong-ri, Nonsan, said to be the site of the Battle of Hwangsanbeol between Silla and Baekje. Most of the tombs were destroyed by looting after Korea's liberation, but four rounds of excavation identified 20 stone-chamber tombs with a corridor entrance, 18 stone-chamber tombs with an open front, and one jar-coffin tomb. The pottery finds include mounted dishes, bottle-shaped vessels, mounted jars, stands and three-legged vessels, among many other types recovered in large numbers, providing good material for research into their lineage, character and distribution. Four bottle-shaped vessels were found here, a rare form of which only one other example has been unearthed on the Korean peninsula, at the Naju Daean-ri Tombs, a historic site. The mounted jars are of the same form as those from the Nakdonggang River basin, showing evidence of cultural exchange. The three-legged vessels, typical of Baekje, are the most numerous type recovered, and all have lids. Through changes in pottery style and comparison with Silla and Gaya pottery, the tombs are estimated to have been formed roughly from the 5th to the early 6th century. The Pyojeong-ri tombs, in which Silla and Gaya pottery has also been unearthed, are valued as good material for examining the cultural exchange and influence in this region at the time.
