This stone-built fortress stands on the ridge of Chuhwasan Mountain, 243m above sea level, in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, about 2km east of Miryang Eupseong, the town's main fortress. Chuhwasanseong Fortress is presumed to be the site of an early Three Kingdoms-period mountain fortress, thought to have been built during the era when Silla and Gaya confronted each other across the Nakdonggang River. The fortress wall is 1,430m in circumference. Gate sites are found on the east, west and south, and on the flat ground of the valley to the north there appear to have been a well, a pond and associated buildings. A beacon-fire station stands at the western and northern peaks of Chuhwasan Mountain; in the event of enemy invasion this served both as a military vantage point and as a means of warning the surrounding residents and troops of the threat. Fragments of roof tiles, earthenware, buncheong ware (a grey stoneware coated with white slip) and white porcelain have been found within the fortress. Chuhwasanseong Fortress was most likely used first as the town's main fortress, but appears to have taken on the role of a mountain fortress once the town fortress came to be built on the site of present-day Miryang.
