This memorial stele and battle site were erected to honour General Jang Ji-hyeon (pen name Samgoe, 1536-1593), a righteous army leader during the Japanese invasion of 1592. In the 23rd year of King Seonjo's reign (1590), Jang Ji-hyeon became a deputy commander under General Sin Rip, and the following year was appointed Inspector (gamchal) of the Office of the Inspector-General (Saheonbu), but soon resigned and returned to his hometown. When the Japanese invasion broke out, he raised 2,000 righteous army soldiers, joined forces with the government army, and fought some 10,000 Japanese troops at Chupungnyeong, driving them back towards Gimcheon. However, he was soon caught in a pincer attack by Japanese forces advancing from the direction of Geumsan Mountain, and died in battle together with his cousin Ho-hyeon. In 1978 a shrine was built here to honour the general's lofty resolve and patriotic loyalty.
