Seocheon Namsanseong Fortress
서천남산성 · 舒川南山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a mountain fortress in Seocheon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, built by walling in the summit of Namsan Mountain. The walls were built using natural stones roughly 30–40cm on each side. The fortress has a total circumference of 620m, and a south gate site 2.6m wide and a west gate site 2.5m wide have been confirmed; inside, a passage 6–9m wide runs along the wall. Today the wall survives on the south and north sides, and at points where it has collapsed, pottery and roof-tile fragments from the Three Kingdoms period have been found, showing that the site was already in use as a dwelling place in that era. According to the Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam, the stone wall measured 1,545 cheok (a traditional unit of length) in circumference, and there was a single well inside the fortress; it also records that in King Sejong's reign the site's topography was judged unfavourable and the town wall (eupseong) was relocated. This indicates that the site continued to function as a mountain fortress or town wall at least until King Sejong's time. From here it is possible to survey the surrounding area and watch over movements on the West Sea and the mouth of the Geumgang River, suggesting that from the Baekje period onward this was a strategic point for defending the frontier.
