Gagok-ri Ancient Tomb, Yeongdong
영동 가곡리 고분 · 永同 柯谷里 古墳

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krLocated in Yeongdong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, this is a Silla-style tomb that has long been known by the old name 'Malmudeom' (Horse Tomb). Local tradition linked it either to Kim Heum-un, son-in-law of King Taejong Muyeol, or to the warhorse of Yi Ui-jeong, a righteous-army leader who died a martyr's death at Jinjuseong Fortress during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98. However, excavation in 1933 revealed it instead to be a Silla stone-chamber tomb of the mid-seventh century. The 25 artefacts recovered from the tomb are now held in the Chungbuk National University Museum. The Gagok-ri tomb is one of the important remains illuminating the history of this region.
