Dolmens are the representative tombs of the Bronze Age, also known as goindol, and are understood mainly as the graves of a ruling class holding economic or political power. Korean dolmens fall into two types: the table type, in which four supporting stones form a chamber topped by a massive flat capstone, and the go-board type, in which a stone chamber is built underground with small supporting stones and a covering slab, topped in turn by a huge capstone. This example stands within a village at the foot of Gyeongunsan Mountain west of Gimhae. There appear originally to have been more dolmens at the site, but most have been lost to house rebuilding and land reclamation, leaving only one surviving today. It is of the go-board type; its capstone measures 3.1m in length and 2.4m in width, and a stone-lined cist was built into the ground beneath it. Red burnished pottery and plain coarse pottery excavated around the dolmen make it valuable material for the study of Bronze Age life.
