Jungnimjae Hall
죽림재 · 竹林齋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is where members of the Changnyeong Jo clan studied. The date Jungnimjae was first built is unknown, but it is said to have been founded by Jo Su-mun, pen name Jungnim (1426–?). The original building burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598 and was rebuilt in 1623, the first year of King Injo, by Jo Bu, pen name Samcheongdang, a sixth-generation descendant of Jungnim. It was later closed down in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under the Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon academies, before being rebuilt again in 1948. The restored Jungnimjae has a front of two bays and a side of two bays, and is roofed with a hip-and-gable roof (paljakjibung) that forms the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" (八) when viewed from the side.
