Mireuk-ri Kiln Site, Chungju
충주 미륵리 요지 · 忠州 彌勒里 窯址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA yoji (kiln site) refers to the remains of a kiln where porcelain, tiles or other vessels were fired. The Mireuk-ri kiln site lies on the southeastern slope of a high mountain in Jeommal Village, close to the site of Jungwon Mireuksa Temple, where kilns from several periods spanning the 17th to the early 20th century are concentrated in one place. Four kiln remains, one deposit layer, and one workshop area have been identified here. The kilns are of the stepped climbing-chamber type and are well preserved. Excavated artefacts include underglaze cobalt-blue white porcelain, underglaze iron white porcelain, and underglaze iron white porcelain decorated with grass designs. Because early-20th-century white porcelain kilns and Japanese-style kilns were excavated together at the Mireuk-ri site, it provides important material for the study of ceramic history, shedding light not only on exchange between Korean and Japanese ceramic cultures but also on traditional Korean kiln-building methods and patterns of porcelain production.
