This is the tomb of Hong Dae-yong (1731–1783), pen name Damheon, a Silhak (Practical Learning) scholar and scientific thinker of the late Joseon period. He accompanied his uncle Hong Eok on a diplomatic mission to Qing China, where he formed friendships with various scholars and visited Western missionaries to observe and learn about Western civilisation. Together with Yi Deok-mu, Bak Ji-won, Bak Je-ga and others he formed the Bukhak School (Northern Learning School); as a pioneer of this school he took a particular interest in astronomy and argued for the theory that the earth rotates. His writings include the Damheonseo. The tomb lies beside the road leading from Jangsan-ri to Sokchang-ri in Susin-myeon, Cheonan. In front of the grave stand a stone offering table, a pair of ornamental stone pillars (mangjuseok) and a memorial stone. The front of the stone reads "Damheon Honggong Daeyong ji myo, Sugin Hansan Yi-ssi bujwa" (Tomb of Lord Hong Dae-yong, pen name Damheon, with his wife Lady Yi of Hansan buried to the left), and the back bears an epitaph composed by Kim Heung-geun, erected in 1857.
