This is Korea's oldest Paleolithic cultural site, where cultural layers spanning almost every period from the early Paleolithic to the Bronze Age have been found, making it possible to trace the character of each layer. In 1980, a surface survey of cultural remains was carried out in the area to be submerged by the construction of the Chungju Dam, confirming the site as a Paleolithic cave site. Three subsequent excavations revealed that cultural layers had formed over several periods from the Paleolithic to the Bronze Age, and the excavated artefacts show that Paleolithic culture forms the core of the site. The cave measures 8m in height and 7–10m in width at the entrance, with a confirmed length of 85m. It is a rare example of a cave in which the prehistoric cultural layers appear in full, unbroken sequence, clearly showing traces of people who lived there across many periods.
