Haenam Sinwol-ri Bangdaehyeong Ancient Tomb
해남신월리방대형고분 · 海南新月里方臺形古墳

This tomb, at the northern foot of Seongmasan Mountain in Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, was discovered in 1986. It is a banghyeong jeupseokbun, a square-based mound raised in earth and then densely faced with stone. The discovery of this type of tomb at this, the southernmost point in Korea, has drawn scholarly attention. Together with the jeonbanghuwon-hyeong tomb at Janggosan, Yongun-ri — a tomb square at the front and round at the rear, a keyhole shape associated with ancient Japan — it is an important site for clarifying both the mutual influence between ancient Korean and Japanese tomb cultures and the tomb culture of the Jeollanam-do region.
