Subongjeong Pavilion
수봉정 · 秀峯亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pavilion is the site where Yi Gyu-in (pen name Subong, 1859–1936) carried out relief work for the poor, educational projects to nurture talent, and support for independence activists. In 1924 he built it as a two-storey structure comprising Bihaedang, a village school, and Boinjae, a pharmacy, but it was remodelled into its present single-storey form in 1953. He founded the private Gyeongju Higher Common School in order to train talented people to save the nation, but it was ultimately seized by the Government-General of Joseon and reopened as Gyeongju Public Middle School. After liberation, however, in keeping with his last wishes it was restored as a private school and continues as one today. This building holds deep significance as a place to learn from his foresight and his practice of what he preached.
