The Gunanggul site is a Paleolithic cave site, remarkable in Korea for having both its exterior form and interior preserved almost completely intact. Three excavations carried out from 1986 confirmed it to be a Paleolithic site composed of eight layers in total. In particular, many artefacts and animal fossils were found concentrated in Layer 3, showing that this was the main cultural layer. The cave entrance faces southeast, and the site is fairly large, with an entrance width of 5.5m and a total length of 140m. Here an adult male's ankle bone, instep bones and toe bones were found, along with animal fossils of the short-tailed monkey, sika deer, bear and tiger, and stone tools such as scrapers and end-scrapers. The animal bones found here show signs of deliberate stabbing and cutting marks, offering insight into how people of the time killed or butchered animals.
