This was a place where the painter Yi Eung-no (1904–1989), who raised the excellence of Eastern art onto the world stage, pursued his artistic work. Sudeok Inn was purchased by Yi Eung-no in 1944 and also served as a refuge during the Korean War; it was likewise a place where he captured the beautiful scenery around Sudeoksa Temple on canvas. It was also where he stayed and worked before leaving for France in 1959. The rock carving in front of Sudeok Inn is a work he made in 1969, after returning to his hometown following the Dongbaengnim Incident, abstractly expressing the flourishing and decline of all things in creation as seen in his native hills and streams.
