This is where Baek Jeong-gi (1896–1934), pen name Gupa, lived as a child. He was born in Buan in 1896, the first year of the Geonyang era, lost his father while still young, and moved to this house in 1907, living here for twelve years until 1919, when he fled to China to join the independence movement. After taking part in the March First Independence Movement, he continued his independence activities until he was captured and imprisoned for a long term in a Japanese prison; his chronic illness worsened there, and he died for the nation's independence in 1934. His remains were returned from Japan in 1946 and interred at Hyochang Park, and in 1963 he was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independence Medal. The house was originally a traditional thatched Korean house, but it collapsed, and in its place stands a cement-block house with a slate roof, built around 1975. The building has a front of three bays and a side of one bay, and little trace remains of the original structure from when it was first built.
