청도읍성 · 淸道邑城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAn eupseong is a walled town built to protect the residents of a county or district (gun or hyeon) while serving both military and administrative functions. Cheongdoeupseong was built making use of the natural terrain, high in the south and low in the north, and shows a form intermediate between a mountain fortress and a lowland fortress. According to the Eupji, a local gazetteer, the wall measured 1,570 bo (1,880 m) in circumference and 5 cheok 5 chon (1.7 m) in height, but most of it was demolished under the Japanese colonial policy of dismantling walled towns, and today only the base of the wall and a few sections remain. The plan of the walled town is close to rectangular, and the sites of gates remain on the east, west and north sides. Cheongdoeupseong has existed since the Goryeo period; it was originally built of stone mixed with earth, but was rebuilt in stone in 1590, the twenty-third year of King Seonjo, and completed in 1592, the twenty-fifth year of his reign.
