Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krO Yun-gyeom (pen name Chutan, 1559–1636), whose clan seat was Haeju, was a scholar-official of the mid-Joseon period. He passed the lower civil service examination in 1582, and when the Imjin War broke out in 1592 he was selected as an aide to Jeong Cheol. He subsequently held a series of official posts, rising to the position of Chief State Councillor. The tomb of O Yun-gyeom was built as a pair of mounds together with that of his wife, of the Gyeongju Yi clan. In front of the burial mound stand a stone figure and an incense-burner stone, and to the north of the mound stands a memorial stele. Child-attendant stone figures, stone pillars and civil-official stone figures stand on either side of the tomb precinct. The memorial stele, erected in 1647 in the wonsubangbu style — a stele form with a round capstone and a square base — was composed by Kim Sang-heon, with the calligraphy written by Song Jun-gil. According to its inscription, O Yun-gyeom had instructed that, since he had rendered no service to the state and possessed no virtue in his person, no stele should be raised at his burial and no posthumous title requested; but his descendants judged that failing to record this would be contrary to benevolence, and so had it set down on a small stele. Irregular characters are carved on the front and back of the lower part of the stele body; these were practice carvings made on the section intended to fit into the stele's base before the main inscription was cut. They are now exposed to view, and are a very valuable record.
