Yi Jip Tomb Stele, Jincheon
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stele stands before the tomb of Yi Jip, a filial son of the mid-Joseon period. Yi Jip's clan seat was Goseong; from childhood he was exceptionally filial, and whenever his parents lay ill he would not remove his clothes or allow himself to be seen smiling. He is also said to have tasted his parents' stool to gauge the severity of their illness, and to have gone outside at night to pray to heaven. Within its protective shelter, the stele consists of a stele body set on a square base stone and topped with a capstone of exquisite craftsmanship. The capstone depicts two dragons rendered so realistically that they seem to writhe as if alive. The stele was erected in 1727, the third year of King Yeongjo.
