Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJiksansasanseong is a fortress in Jiksan-myeon, Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, enclosing the valley of Seongsan, a mountain 176 m above sea level. According to the Dongguk yeoji seungnam, Sasanseong was an earthen-walled fortress 2,947 cheok (a traditional unit of length) in circumference with a single well site inside, but the well can no longer be found. Pottery believed to date from the early 5th to 6th century and attributed to Baekje or Goguryeo has been found here, along with pedestal dishes belonging to Silla relics of the late 6th century, and roof-tile fragments carved with striped and lattice patterns. Some scholars believe the fortress was built by Mokjiguk, one of the statelets of the Mahan confederacy. It is considered a site of great importance for both documentary history and archaeology.
