This is the site of Lion Temple, near the summit of Mireuksan Mountain. Lion Temple was built before Mireuksa Temple, and it is said that while King Mu of Baekje and Queen Seonhwa were making a royal visit to this Lion Temple, a triad of Maitreya Buddha images appeared in a pond beneath Yonghwasan Mountain, and this occasion led to the founding of Mireuksa Temple. Important in the history of Baekje Buddhism for having provided the occasion for the founding of Mireuksa Temple, this temple's location had long been disputed, but an excavation in 1993 uncovered roof-tile fragments confirming the site as that of Lion Temple. Nothing of its original appearance survives. The temple today consists of a Daeungjeon Hall enshrining Sakyamuni, a dormitory where monks live, and a storehouse, with a single stone pagoda remaining in front of the Daeungjeon Hall.
