This is a stele erected to commemorate Bak Han-ju, a civil official of the early Joseon period. Bak Han-ju (pen name Ojolje, 1459–1504) was a disciple of Kim Jong-jik. He passed the special state examination in 1485, the sixteenth year of King Seongjong, and held posts such as Jeongeon of the Office of the Censor-General and Jeokjeok of Seonggyungwan, the National Confucian Academy. He reported on the disordered rule of Yeonsangun with upright words and conduct, thereby incurring the enmity of the king and the Hungu faction of meritorious officials, and was exiled during the Muo Sahwa, a literati purge. In 1504, the tenth year of Yeonsangun's reign, he was implicated in the Gapja Sahwa, another purge, and was executed. After the restoration that enthroned King Jungjong, his honour was restored and he was posthumously appointed Chief Royal Secretary and concurrently Jikjehak of the Yemun-gwan. The stele consists of a massive stele body set on a square base stone and topped with a capstone. It was erected in 1692, the seventh year of King Injo; the inscription was composed by Kim Eung-jo and written by Yi Gwan-jing. The stele pavilion is three bays wide across the front and two bays deep on the side, roofed with a paljak, or hipped-and-gabled roof, which forms the shape of the character 八, meaning "eight," when viewed from the side.
