This house was designed and built by Sim Hun, a literary figure of the Japanese colonial period, in 1934. Sim Hun was a novelist and poet whose work was grounded in nationalism and a spirit of resistance. It was here, in 1935, that he wrote his best-known work, the rural enlightenment novel 'Sangnoksu' (The Evergreen Tree). Pilgyeongsa was at one time used as a church; his eldest nephew, the late Sim Jae-yeong, later bought it back, cared for it, and eventually donated it to Dangjin County. The roof is finished in the hip-and-gable style, shaped like the character 八 (eight) when viewed from the side.
