The Jeolla Provincial Office had jurisdiction over what are now Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do and Jeju Island, with the provincial governor as its supreme head. Built in the early Joseon period, it was an imposing complex of more than forty buildings, including Pojeongmun, its main gate; Seonhwadang, the governor's office hall; and Yeonsindang, the governor's residential quarters. However, most of the buildings disappeared in the course of modernisation or were destroyed by fire in accidents. This site holds great historical significance, not only as the administrative centre of Jeolla-do during the Joseon period, but also as the location of Seonhwadang, where the Daedoso, the general headquarters of the jipgangso (the self-governing bodies of the peasant army), was set up during the 1894 Donghak Peasant Revolution.
