Dolmens are a representative type of Bronze Age tomb, also known as goindol, generally understood to be the burials of a ruling class with economic wealth or political power. Dolmens in Korea fall into two types: the table type, in which four supporting stones are raised to form a stone chamber topped by a huge flat capstone, and the go-board (baduk-board) type, in which a stone chamber is built underground with small supporting stones set beneath the capstone. The two dolmens on the coast at Bongpyeong-dong, Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, have capstones resting on small supporting stones; because the capstones lie flush with the ground, the structure beneath them cannot be examined in detail. According to local residents, dozens of dolmens once lined the nearby coastline, but most were damaged or had their capstones separated as houses were built, leaving only these two today. The Bongpyeong-dong dolmens are regarded as important material for research into Bronze Age dolmens of Korea's south coast and island regions, and for comparison with dolmens in Japan, which show similarities to those of Korea's southern coast.
