Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis temple site, on a ridge of Mount Godeoksan linking Hwawon village and Sanghabo village in Gui-myeon, is presumed to be the site of Gyeongboksa Temple. Gyeongboksa is said to have been built after the Goguryeo monk Bodeok moved to Baekje because the state had come to venerate Taoism and no longer believed in the Buddhist teachings, and it is recorded as having been one of the 36 head temples (bonsa) during the Joseon period. It continued in existence beyond the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598 before disappearing, though exactly when is not known. At the site, stone retaining walls survive in relatively good condition, and many artefacts dating to the Three Kingdoms period have been excavated.
