A hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and morally guide the local populace. Jiksanhyanggyo was originally built in the early Joseon period, was burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592, and was subsequently rebuilt; it has since been repaired on several occasions to take on its present form. The surviving buildings are Daeseongjeon (the main shrine hall), Myeongnyundang (the lecture hall), a dongjae (east dormitory), an inner three-gate (naesammun) and an outer three-gate (oesammun). Daeseongjeon enshrines the spirit tablets of the Five Sages, including Confucius, together with sages of China and Korea. During the Joseon dynasty the school received land, books and government slaves from the state to support its teaching, but after the Gabo Reform of 1894 its educational function ceased, and today it is used only for memorial rites held each spring and autumn.
