Yeongam Jangdongsa
영암장동사 · 靈岩長洞祠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shrine was built to commemorate Jeon Bong-seong (1561–1597), a meritorious subject of the Japanese invasions of Korea, and it also enshrines Jeon Bong-jin and Jeon Bong-dae of the Cheonan Jeon clan. Jeon Bong-seong joined the Battle of Geumsan under the righteous army commander Go Gyeong-myeong during the invasions, and was afterwards appointed magistrate of Hampyeong in recognition of his achievements. During the second Japanese invasion he joined forces with Yu Jang-chun and others to fight in the Battle of Yulchi, but was sadly killed in the Battle of Hyeonseokpo in 1597, the 30th year of King Seonjo. This building was repaired in 1706, the 32nd year of King Sukjong, and the spirit tablets of Jeon Bong-jin and Jeon Bong-dae were subsequently enshrined here in 1776, the 52nd year of King Yeongjo, and in 1836, the 2nd year of King Heonjong, respectively. It was later closed in 1868, the 5th year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing private Confucian academies, before local Confucian scholars relocated it to its present site and rebuilt it in 1946.
