Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDaerimsanseong Fortress, in Hyangsan-ri, Salmi-myeon, Chungju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, takes the form of a wall enclosing a mountain summit together with its valley. It is presumed to have been built during the Three Kingdoms period. The name 'Daerimsanseong' first appears in the Sejong sillok jiriji (Geographical Appendix to the Annals of King Sejong), showing that Daerimsan Mountain was still in use as a beacon-fire station in the early Joseon period. The fortress follows a sharply winding ridge line to aid defence, and the terrain is especially steep, with rock faces forming a natural stronghold in many places. Near the west, south, and east gate sites, where gentler slopes made approach relatively easy, double and triple defensive walls were built separately to fortify the position. Around the most vulnerable point, the west gate site, the ridges on both sides stretch out to narrow the approach over a long distance; the route from the entrance to the gate itself is long, and defensive structures were placed at intervals along it, so that this area functioned almost as a small fortress built to protect the gate. Within the fortress, the sites of a well and buildings remain, and at the summit is the site of a beacon-fire mound. The scattering of roof-tile fragments and temple sites in the surrounding area today indicates that this was a historically significant region.
