Malmokjangteo, situated across the road from the Ipyeong-myeon office in Jeongeup, was the place where several thousand farmers of the Baedeul Plain gathered before setting out for Gobu during the Donghak Peasant Revolution of 1894; a command post (jangducheong) was set up here and troops stationed until the first uprising at Baeksan. There also stands here a persimmon tree about 180 years old. It is said that beneath this tree Jeon Bong-jun told the farmers gathered at Malmokjangteo of the tyranny of magistrate Jo Byeong-gap and the exploitation of the peasantry, and argued forcefully for the need for an uprising. To this day, local residents do not pick the persimmons from this tree.
