Landscape Ri Dolmen
산수리지석묘 · 山水里支石墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDolmens are the representative tombs of the Bronze Age, also known as goindol. Korean dolmens fall into two types: the table type, in which four support stones are set upright to form a stone chamber topped with a huge, flat capstone, and the go-board type, in which a stone chamber is built underground with small support stones set beneath the capstone. The Sansu-ri Dolmen stands in a field about 100 m east across the road from Bangchuk village, Sansu-ri, Gochang County. It takes the form of a broad, rectangular capstone supported by five support stones. The granite capstone, oriented north-south, is held up by three support stones on the north side and two on the south; these protrude 70-120 cm above the ground and are relatively long. As the dolmen sits on a slope facing south, the support stones on the south side are longer and thicker than those on the north. The Sansu-ri Dolmen is well preserved in its external form, and traces of stones wedged in place, along with clumps of soil, remain on the upper surfaces of the support stones beneath the capstone. This makes it valuable evidence for understanding how dolmens were constructed.
