Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA jeongnyeo is a gate or stone marker erected by the state at the entrance to a village to honour a loyal subject, filial child or virtuous woman. This memorial gate was erected in 1753, the 29th year of King Yeongjo, to honour the loyalty of General Sin Yeo-ryang (1564-1606), who distinguished himself in battle during and after the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. General Sin Yeo-ryang passed the state examination in 1583, the 16th year of King Seonjo, and held several posts including royal messenger-officer before escorting the king to Uiju when the Japanese invasions broke out in 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo. He later served under Gwon Yul and distinguished himself at the Battle of Haengju, and during the second Japanese invasion he fought naval battles alongside Yi Sun-sin, Naval Commander of the Three Provinces. In 1604 he took part in the Battle of Dangpo and was awarded the "Dangpo jeonyang seungcheopjido" (Painting of Victory off Dangpo) in recognition of his achievements, and in December 1605 he was appointed Naval Commander of Right Jeolla Province. Relics left by General Sin Yeo-ryang — including Treasure No. 1937, the "Sangga gyoseo" (royal commendation document), Treasure No. 1938, the "Milbu yuseo" (royal edict bearing a secret tally), the "Jusa seonyeonjido" and the "Dangpo jeonyang seungcheopjido" — are held at the Gwangju National Museum.
