This building was erected to honour Kim Yeo-ik (1606-1660), the first person in Korea to cultivate laver (gim). Kim Yeo-ik came to Taein Island in 1640, the 18th year of King Injo, and was the first to cultivate laver in the sea there. According to records, Kim Yeo-ik raised a righteous army during the Manchu invasion of 1636, but after the court surrendered to Qing China he withdrew to Taein Island and made his living by cultivating laver. It is thought that he devised his method of laver cultivation sometime between 1640, the 18th year of King Injo, and 1659, the first year of King Hyeonjong. It is also said that laver was originally called haeui, and that its name was changed to gim after the surname of Kim Yeo-ik, who first devised its cultivation.
