Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify the local populace. The date Asanhyanggyo was first built is unknown; it was relocated and rebuilt on its present site from Hyanggyo-gol, east of Asan-ri, in 1575, the eighth year of King Seonjo of Joseon, and was repaired in 1864, the first year of Emperor Gojong. The buildings that survive today are the Daeseongjeon, the Myeongnyundang, the Naesammun and the Oesammun. The Daeseongjeon, the space for holding memorial rites, is three bays wide and two bays deep. Its roof is a napbae, or gable roof, which resembles the character 人 when seen from the side, and the bracket sets supporting the eaves are carved in the ikgong style, shaped like a bird's wing. Inside are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius and of various sages of China and Korea. The Myeongnyundang is the lecture hall where students gathered to study; it is three bays wide and two bays deep with a napbae roof. In the Joseon period the state supported the school with land, slaves and books so that it could teach students, but today its educational function has been lost and only its function of holding memorial rites remains.
