This academy was built in 1695, the twenty-first year of King Sukjong of Joseon, by Confucian scholars from five provinces to hold memorial rites for Son Jung-don, pen name Ujae (1463-1529), and to honour his scholarly virtue. At the time it included the shrine hall Sungdeoksa, the hall Sungyodang, the pavilion Takcheongnu, and the gate Yudomun. Most of these were torn down in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, but the shrine hall, lecture hall and the inner gate (sinmun) were rebuilt in 1960; the east and west dormitories (dongjae and seojae) and the stele pavilion (sindobigak) were restored in 1986, and Takcheongnu was restored in 1999. Ujae was the son of Son So, Lord Gyecheon, who put down the rebellion of Yi Si-ae, and he studied under Kim Jong-jik, pen name Jeompiljae. After passing the lower civil service examination in the thirteenth year of King Seongjong, he went on to serve as provincial governor of Gyeongsang, Chungcheong, Jeolla and Hamgyeong, as mayor of Hanseong, as chief royal secretary, and as Minister of Personnel, and was named a cheongbaekri, one of the officials of the Joseon period honoured for their integrity and incorruptibility. While serving as magistrate of Sangju he governed the district so well that the residents built him a saengsadang, a shrine erected in honour of a living person, at Danmil in Sangju; and while provincial governor of Hamgyeong he had the Manse Bridge built, for which the people praised his virtue. The lecture hall has a three-bay-wide central hall with a heated room (ondol) on each side and a wooden veranda at the front; it is used for various ceremonies and for scholarly discussion. The shrine hall is a gabled building, three bays across the front and two bays deep forming a single open space, with wind boards (pungpan) fitted to its gable ends.
