Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA kiln site (yoji) is where pottery, roof tiles or other ceramic vessels were fired. Excavation of the Yongsan-ri Buncheong Ware Kiln Site by a buried heritage survey institution, carried out from May 2001 to February 2002, identified a total of four kilns. Buncheong ware is a grey-blue stoneware coated with white slip, common in the early Joseon period. Of the four kilns, Kiln No. 4, located furthest north, had lost a substantial part of its structure, while the remaining three were found in relatively good condition. Kiln No. 1 is about 2,450 cm long overall; although partly lost, its firebox, firing chamber and chimney section survive in complete form, and in particular about 3 m of the ceiling section remains. The firing chamber consists of five sections, 150–160 cm wide, with fire-window pillars and firebox ledges built at intervals of about 4 m to form a stepped profile. The ceiling section is 25–30 cm thick and was built to a height of about 70 cm above the floor. Kiln No. 2 retains its floor and part of its walls; the remains appear to have undergone roughly two rounds of repair. It is about 2,260 cm long overall, with a firing-chamber width of about 120–130 cm. Kiln No. 3 has lost most of its firing chamber, but its chimney section survives in good condition, while only traces remain of the combustion chamber and firebox. It is about 1,040 cm long overall, with a firing-chamber width of about 110 cm. This is the first buncheong ware kiln to have been excavated in Jeollabuk-do Special Self-Governing Province, and the survival of the kiln's ceiling section and the use of a stepped firing chamber make it a very valuable source of information. The excavated relics also include a large quantity of black-glazed ware, making this an important resource for examining the early Joseon-period range of buncheong ware, white porcelain and black-glazed ware.
