Hansan Yi Clan Burial Ground
한산이씨묘역 · 韓山李氏墓域

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the family burial ground of the Hansan Yi clan, spread across the whole of Yeongjangsan Mountain in Seongnam. The site was a sapaeji (land bestowed directly by the king), and from the mid to late Joseon period it became established, generation after generation, as the clan's hereditary burial mountain. On the southern slope are the graves of Yi Jang-yun, grandfather of Yi Ji-ham (whose pen name was Tojeong), along with Yi Jil, Yi Ji-suk, Yi Jeung, Yi Hwak, Yi Jip and Yi Jeong. To the south-east are the graves of Yi Gyeong-nyu, son of Yi Jeung, who died a martyr's death during the Imjin War (the Japanese invasions of Korea), together with the grave of his beloved horse, and the grave of Yi Jeong-nyong, grandson of Yi Jeung. To the south-west are the graves of Yi O, Yi Won, Yi Han and Yi Byeong-geon. Also near the entrance to the south-west central park stand the Stele of the Deeds of the Hansan Yi Clan from the Third Generation Onward, erected in 1722, along with the spirit-path stele for Yi Jeung (erected 1695), the commendation stele for Yi Gyeong-nyu (erected 1727), and the spirit-path stele for Yi Jeong-nyong (erected 1728). Each grave is furnished with various stone fittings, mainly grave markers, offering tables, incense-burner stones, paired ornamental stone pillars, and stone figures, made using high-quality stone. Of particular note are the grave marker of Yi Jeung and the stone figures at the grave of Yi Jang-yun. The dragon pattern on the capstone of Yi Jeung's grave marker is carved with exceptional skill and grandeur, while the stone figure of a boy attendant at Yi Jang-yun's grave later became the standard for the stone furnishings of this burial ground. This family burial ground allows the characteristics of Gyeonggi-do's clan villages and eumtaek culture (the geomantic siting of grave sites, as distinct from homes for the living) associated with royal land grants to be examined. It is also a place where changes in Joseon burial customs and stone-furnishing styles can be surveyed at a glance, giving it very high cultural heritage value.
