고흥월정리의해안방풍림 · 高興月亭里의海岸防風林

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe coastal windbreak forest at Woljeong-ri, Goheung, stands along the shore of Seonjeong Village in Woljeong-ri; it is about 400 m long and 25 m wide. The forest was planted by the villagers to protect the village from sea winds. It is made up of 137 trees in total: 50 Chinese fringe trees (Chionanthus retusus), 27 hackberries, 24 muku trees (Aphananthe aspera), 21 Japanese spindle trees, 4 zelkovas, 5 black pines, 2 sawtooth oaks, 2 bee-bee trees, 1 persimmon and 1 chinaberry. Villagers have set up an altar around a large zelkova tree, and every year on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month they hold a byeolsinje, a village guardian rite, praying for the peace and wellbeing of the community. The forest is also used by villagers as a place to rest. A distinctive feature of this windbreak forest is that it contains relatively few black pines, common in windbreak forests elsewhere on the coast, and is instead dominated by Chinese fringe trees and hackberries.
