This is the place where Yi Hyeon-il, pen name Garam (1627-1704), taught younger scholars in his final years. Yi Hyeon-il was a leading figure of the Yeongnam School who inherited the scholarly tradition of Yi Hwang, supporting Yi Hwang's theory of "the mutual issuance of principle and material force" and opposing the theories of Yi I. This site is said to have been built by his disciples after his death in order to carry on his teachings. In the year he turned 68, he was exiled in the Gapsul Purge of 1694, and after being released in 1701, the 27th year of King Sukjong, he settled here at Geumso-ri. He built the Geumyang Academy here and lectured to younger scholars until his death in 1704, the 30th year of King Sukjong, at the age of 78. The Geumyanggeumunrok records the scholars who took part in his teaching over five years, listing as many as 657 names, giving a sense of his scholarly stature and moral standing.
