Jeonju Yi Ssi Seowongunpa Burial Ground
전주이씨서원군파묘역 · 全州李氏瑞原君派墓域

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeowongun (瑞原君) was Yi Chin (1412–1475), second son of Grand Prince Hyoryeong, who was himself the second son of King Taejong. This burial ground was developed in stages around the graves of Yi Sin-seong, a fourth-generation descendant of Seowongun, his son Yi Mok, and his grandson Yi Ji-hang, with further family graves added over time. At the entrance to the burial ground stand two spirit-path steles (sindobi, memorial steles traditionally erected along the approach to a tomb) for Yi Sin-seong and Yi Mok, placed side by side. Yi Sin-seong's grave is furnished with a grave marker, an offering table, an incense-burner stone, and a pair each of stone pillars and civil-official statues. The grave marker is of the isu-gwibu type (a stele with a capstone carved with dragon motifs set on a tortoise-shaped base), sturdy and imposing in form, reflecting the high status held as a member of the royal clan. The spirit-path stele is likewise an imposing isu-gwibu type, its capstone carved with two dragons contending for a wish-fulfilling jewel, composed with neat balance and executed with great skill. The survival of two such isu-gwibu steles at a single grave is a rare case. Yi Mok's grave has a grave marker, an offering table, a stone pillar and a civil-official statue. The grave marker, of the isu-bangbu type (a dragon-carved capstone on a square base), was erected in 1855, the sixth year of King Cheoljong. The spirit-path stele, of the okgae-bangbu type (a roof-shaped capstone on a square base), was erected in 1706, the thirty-second year of King Sukjong, with its inscription composed by Nam Gu-man. This burial ground is notable as the tombs of members of the royal clan, and is important because it allows the characteristics of tomb culture to be traced in sequence from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century.
