A hyanggyo is a local Confucian school established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and morally instruct the local populace. Haemihyanggyo was built in 1407, the seventh year of King Taejong of Joseon, when Jeonghae-hyeon and Yeomi-hyeon were merged to form Haemi-hyeon. It was rebuilt in 1844, the tenth year of King Heonjong, and repaired again in 1924. Inside Daeseongjeon, the hall where memorial rites are held, are enshrined the spirit tablets of twenty-seven sages, including Confucius, nine Chinese Confucian scholars and eighteen Korean sages.
