통영 염언상 묘 · 統營 廉彦祥 墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of Yeom Eon-sang (1552–?), a military official of the mid-Joseon period. From childhood he steadily read books on military affairs, and when the Japanese invasions of Korea broke out in 1592, the twenty-fifth year of King Seonjo, he joined the forces under General Yi Sun-sin and took part in the war. At the Battle of Okpo off Geoje, the first naval battle of the invasions, he distinguished himself by helping destroy some thirty enemy ships, and he also distinguished himself at the Battle of Hansando, one of the three great victories of the war. Afterwards, when General Yi Sun-sin was falsely accused and imprisoned, Yeom returned to his hometown, led righteous-army troops active in the Namwon region, and then served under General Gwon Yul. The tomb takes the form of a round burial mound, and at its entrance stands a stele known as the Seonmu Wonjonggongsin Yeom Eon-sang Sajeokbi. Wonjonggongsin refers to a title bestowed on those who rendered meritorious service in stabilising the state or the royal household.
