Noseonghyanggyo Local Confucian School
노성향교 · 魯城鄕校

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and edify the local populace. Noseonghyanggyo is said to have originally stood on the site of what is now Noseong Elementary School, though the exact date of its founding is not known; it was moved to its present site around 1700. Only an inscription on a plaque at Myeongnyundang Hall, recording that the Daeseongjeon Hall was repaired in 1631, the ninth year of King Injo, gives evidence that this is an old building. At present the Daeseongjeon Hall, the Dongjae and Seojae (east and west study halls), and the samun (three-bay gate) remain. The Daeseongjeon Hall is a building three bays wide and two bays deep, enshrining inside it the spirit tablets of Confucius at the centre, together with those of Jeungja, Maengja, Anja and Jasa. The Dongmu enshrines the spirit tablets of one sage of Song China and nine Korean sages, and the Seomu those of one sage of Song China and nine Korean sages. Memorial rites are held here every year in the second month of the lunar calendar.
